In Our Notes…Illustrator Katie Wekall

To say that we are blessed by brilliant artists at Little Lamb Books is an understatement! And, the artist for our brand-new devotional is no exception. In fact, her super fun animals and her ability to be flexible with our design needs, places her in our top five favorite people on the planet! So without further ado, we are introducing you to KATIE WEKALL, illustrator of our brand-new devotional ALL GOD’S CREATURES: 60 DAYS OF DEVOTIONS FOR ANIMAL-LOVING KIDS. Katie comes to us by way of South Carolina, and we are thrilled to have her join us for our first non-fiction book.

Tell us a little bit about your family. My family has always been an important part of my life. My parents are incredibly supportive of my art and love for illustrating children’s books. I have a brother named Michael, a sister in law named Christina and a cute little niece who is 2 years old. I also have a fiancé named Andrew and a cat named Ellie.

When did you realize that you wanted to spend your life drawing? I have loved art and dreamed of illustrating ever since I was 5-years-old. When you are little everyone always asks, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I would always say that I wanted to be an author and illustrator of children’s books. It has been a dream of mine ever since then.

Did you go to or graduate from art school? If so, which one? I studied art my entire life, but I did not go to art school in college. I studied elementary education and pursued my love of children’s books in a different way by sharing it with the kids I teach. I got my degree in elementary education with a concentration in literature studies from UNC Wilmington.

Picture your favorite workspace. What are five must-have objects would we find there? I would have my iPad and sketchbook, lots of colorful art on the walls, a bookshelf full of children’s books for inspiration, lots of music playing, and a cup of hot tea in my Disney mug.

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator? Keep drawing every day and don’t give up. Find something that inspires you and find joy in the process of creating. If you love it and enjoyed making it, it will shine in your work too.

What do you/did you like about illustrating our All God’s Creatures devotional? I loved creating the animals. Animals are some of my favorite things to illustrate, and I loved portraying the character traits in the story in fun and colorful ways.

Since our devotional is for animal-loving kids, we have to ask: what animal is your favorite? I love Penguins. I think penguins are so adorable. I love the way they walk and slide on their bellies. They have always been my favorite and often make it into my artwork.

Whose illustration work do you admire most? That is a hard question because there are so many. I have always been inspired by Mary Blair’s colorful and whimsical style.

Where do you draw your creativity from? I draw my creativity from being surrounded by children’s books, animals and being outdoors. I have also always been inspired by the art of Disney and enjoy watching some of my favorite movies for a little extra inspiration.

Crayons or Markers or Colored Pencils? Colored Pencils! I love how many colors they come in and how you can blend them to make even more colors!
