Welcome Our New Children’s Author-Illustrator Team Sarah & Joshua Lowe

We’re kicking off 2021 with a brand new addition to our Little Lamb Books author family! YAY! We are excited to announce the acquisition of The Unshakeable Faith of Gus Mustardseed, a colorful picture book for ages 4-8, by Sarah and Joshua Lowe, a husband and wife writing and illustrating team. We recently had the opportunity to chat with them about their family, their writing inspiration, and more. Please help us welcome Sarah and Joshua to our Little Lamb Books flock and read our quick Q&A interview to learn more about this fun couple and this bright and blessed title coming Spring 2021.

Where do you call home (Joshua)? Bloomington, Illinois

Describe your family (Both). We have been married for 15 years and have three children – two boys and a girl between the ages of 10 and 3; both sets of our parents are in our lives as well.

What do you love most about where you live (Sarah):  I love how many parks there are here! I think there are around 50 in the area. We are only two houses away from one of them – my kids love the playground!

Who was the most influential in your growing up years (Joshua)? Encouraging parents, committed youth pastors, good friends, and athletic teams

What do you/did you like about illustrating The Unshakeable Faith of Gus Mustardseed (Sarah)? Gus is such a fun character! I love the expressions I can give him with his asymmetrical eyes and spherical shape. It was also fun to create his quirky looking friends.

What is the main purpose of this story (Joshua)? To encourage children in their faith by reminding them that even though they often feel small and imperfect, their Heavenly Father is big and perfect, and He is mighty to save.

How did you come up with the idea for this book (Joshua)? I was contemplating Matthew 17:20, and imagining this small mustard seed becoming a character and why he would want a mountain to move from here to there.

What are your favorite children’s books (and authors)? (Joshua): Calvin and Hobbes (Bill Waterson), Benjamin Bear Bright Ideas (Philippe Coudray), Poems and Drawings by Shell Silverstein, Stinky Cheese Man (Jon Sciezka and Lane Smith)  (Sarah): I really enjoy Dr. Suess books – I could read them everyday because they just flow off the tongue. I started a new series this year with my daughter called The Princess in Black – it has adorable illustrations and such a fun plotline. But I absolutely love books that point my children to the gospel like The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross.

Where is your favorite place to write(Joshua)?I love the idea phase, when I can walk around outside with a sketchpad and pencil, jotting down notes and talking to myself

What are five objects we would find in your workspace (Sarah)? Sketchbooks & pencils, plenty of painting supplies, a drawing tablet, reference books, and pictures of my kids

Do you prefer coffee or tea (or both, or neither) (Joshua)? Hot Chocolate, please.

Crayons or Markers or Colored Pencils (Sarah)? I think I would pick colored pencils because I love a good color gradient (that’s so hard to do with markers!) and crayons feel too big for my fingers.

We are excited to welcome The Lowes to our Little Lamb Books roster and encourage you to visit their brand new website as well as social platforms, including Facebook or InstagramOver the next couple months, we will share more about the upcoming picture book The Unshakeable Faith of Gus Mustardseed, so stay tuned by signing up for our monthly newsletter!
