Word of the Year 2017
We are halfway through January, and the Little Lamb Books office is filled with anticipation, energy, and lots of to do lists. We have set quite a few goals for 2017, and even though the weather in Texas can’t make up its mind about being hot or cold, the Little Lamb Books staff are staying dialed into what we need to accomplish.
To that end, I have chosen my 2017 Word of the Year for its clarity, its simplicity, and its strength.
That’s my word.
I’m a big proponent of choosing a Word for the Year. While New Year’s resolutions are trendy and setting goals is ordinary, choosing a word from the dictionary that not only embodies all we hope to achieve, but also re-directs us when we jump the tracks weeks from now is a worthwhile task that sets the stage for the 12 months to come. In the past, I’ve been challenged by such words as Investment and Order, and this year I volleyed between the words Tenacious and Pursue, but in the end I was strongly drawn to these five letters.
I love photography. I taught classes about it for many years. I owned my own photography company for a short time. I have albums filled with a plethora of beautiful loved ones and events from over the years. But, there are also images that I have had to throw out because they were blurry, crooked, too bright, or too dark. Why? Mostly because I didn’t FOCUS. When you look through a camera lens you have to clearly see your focal point, and you have to adjust your light, your depth, and your perspective to be certain that the important details, like your best friend laughing, the blue water on your beach vacation, or the action at your son’s soccer game are captured with clarity. This is what makes the final image the one you frame and hold on to for years to come.
365 Days. 52 Weeks. 12 Months. These numbers are never changing; they make up the calendar that we fill in with appointments, meal plans, concerts, and little league games. It’s easy to lose sight of our calling and our purpose and become distracted by the onslaught of social media opinions, negative world news, and overstimulating noise as the minutes tick off the clock.
I chose FOCUS for the precise reason that this word requires me to set aside all the distractions, comparisons, excuses, and fears in order to fix my gaze, my entire being, on pursuing the goal and mission that God has placed in front of me as a woman, a wife, a mom, and especially as the leader and navigator of this family-oriented, faith-based, author friendly company. Although it is simple, it is by no means easy because focusing requires me to set aside my emotions and feelings, and direct my attention to one point, to concentrate on one goal, to pursue one purpose.
I believe God led me to this word because He knows what 2017 holds for me and for Little Lamb Books, and He confirmed it to me in this verse of scripture in the past week.
“Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.” Colossians 3:2
I pray that you and I are able to FOCUS our interactions, our stories, and our choices so that there will be divine moments where God can use us to speak into and positively impact the lives of children and families, friends and coworkers, and even strangers. When we align our FOCUS with HIS, lives are changed, and we become more than conquerors.
